An automatic upgrade was applied to my Thunderbird program this morning, and I can now no longer access my files or read e-mails. When I open Thunderbird I see the various files on the left on the screen, but am unable to move past the Thunderbird home screen. When I click on an individual file, the screen remains in place rather than displaying my in-box as it has in the past. There's also a lock on the envelope logo for the two accounts I use. I've not previously noticed this, but scanning other help replies in the forum reveals this is apparently always present.

I run Windows 7, and there is some talk here of upgrades for Windows 10 causing problems, but I'd have presumed any automatic upgrade would take this into account.

Did you just update to 38.5.1. If so, this will probably fix your problem.

  1. On the toolbar then  Add-ons
  2. Select extensions and remove the Lightning (calendar) addon
  3. Restart Thunderbird
  4. Reinstall Lightning/calendar addon - if you need the functionality

Please tell us, does that help?

Note
  1. If you can't get to Add-ons, then start Thunderbird in safe mode by holding the shift key while starting Thunderbird.
  2. If you still can't get to Add-ons, simply reinstall Thunderbird from http://getthunderbird.com/

Hi Matt,

Thank you very much for your response. I tried several methods advised elsewhere in the support pages, stopping short of re-installing the entire program. None of them appeared to make a difference. I carried on with other work in frustration, leaving Thunderbird alone for a couple of hours, and when I next restarted everything was fine.

My best guess had been that it took far longer than usual for the upgrade to apply, and in the meantime I was locked out. Checking your response, though, I see that the lightning calendar has been automatically disabled.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Frank,

Does that mean you originally had calendar enabled??

I'm afraid I wouldn't know. I was just assuming.
