Why are some tabs red?
Some tabs load red italic, some switch to black normal font. Why please?

Is that with tabs that you haven't visited yet?
Is is probably a feature provided by an installed and enabled extension to mark specific files.
You didn't supply an extensions list, so we can't suggest a possible culprit.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
- Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
