How do I disable automatic sign-in on gmail?

I'm concerned that the automatic sign (which operates when I search for example for 'www.gmail.com') is a security risk - for example if my PC were lost or stolen then anyone could simply search www.gmail.com and have access to my entire email records. I've spent half a day trying to work out how to change this - without success despite my best efforts. Thanks in anticipation of your help. Best wishes, JeromeODonovan (PS I'm using Windows Vista and Firefox 40.0)

Chosen solution

Sound that you had a tick in the box on the Gmail log in page to remember you.

A detail like a website remembering you (log you in automatically) is stored in a cookie.

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you:

  • Create a cookie 'allow' exception to keep such cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
  • Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: Exceptions

You can remove the cookies from a website to make the website forget about you.
