Frequently my monitor gives me a message: "monitor going to sleep"

When this message occurs I have not been able from the keyboard to wake up. I have to turn off computer on back of computer, even disconnecting power supply to a c adapter or monitor does not correct. any ideas? Thank you for any effort on my behalf
