Hi everyone! Right now, I am having a VERY pesky problem when trying to access my account on RuneScape. I have this problem on EVERY browser I've tried to access it with including: Firefox, Opera, Chrome, and Microsoft Edge. Every time I try to do so or even try to access the login page, I am shown this error message:

Secure Connection Failed

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.

So of course, I ran a Google Search and found several suggestions, none of which have solved my problem. They were...

1: Trying to use about:config to change the settings on some of the SSL-related security strings on there. This did nothing. 2: Trying to temporarily shut off my Avast anti-virus program and then logging into the RuneScape website and uninstall Java. I haven't reinstalled it yet, however, this also did nothing. 3: Trying to allow Firefox, Opera, Chrome, and Microsoft Edge through my Firewall did nothing. The only browser I didn't use to try logging into the RuneScape website was Internet Explorer. 4: Following the steps in this video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xnf8UjlXBJU did nothing. 5: Trying to add secure.runescape.com as an allowed certificate also did nothing. -_-

After having tried every one of the above steps, I am completely stumped. All I haven't really tried was checking for and installing Windows updates, checking to see if the problem is being caused by one of my Firefox or other browser extensions-A theory I highly doubt-And reinstalling the latest version of Java. Apart from trying all this, I am essentially locked out of being able to log into the RuneScape website and feel as though I am stranded on an Earth with no moon. I have even tried providing a screenshot of the pesky, super-annoying error message as an additional clarification/visual of the error I keep receiving. Unfortunately, the screenshot won't finish uploading, so here it is via Photobucket:

Please help! I'm reaching the end of my rope over this urgent matter! o.o

Chosen solution

Hi SpiralStorm, that's a lot of data, but I think the bottom line is that you can get to the site in Firefox after uninstalling and reinstalling it. And your problem is solved. Am I reading that correctly?

Hi, see if anything here helps - Secure connection failed and Firefox did not connect.

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you.

Hi there! I have a HUGE update which may be of help to anyone else encountering this problem. This update is in the form of a rather long conversation I had with one of the Ninja Mods of RuneScape. Here it is:

Dark Fury 15-Sep-2015 18:42 Yo! I am using the Game Client to play RuneScape, however, every time I try to use Facebook to log in and the game re-directs me to Firefox, I am shown this error message instead:Secure Connection FailedThe connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. Web Browser: Firefox Browser Version: 40.0.3

Internet Connection: Ethernet Internet Service Provider: Comcast/Xfinity Speed: I dont know

Client or Browser: Browser Error Message: Secure Connection Failed Mod Lex 16-Sep-2015 09:30 Hey Dark Fury,

Thanks for getting in touch with us, Mod Lex here.

I understand you are having some difficulties logging in. This particular issue definitely seems strange and is not something we have heard of before. Because of this I would like to make sure of a few things before we provide you with any specific steps.

First could I ask what browser your are currently using to log in to RuneScape via Facebook. Please bear in mind we recently removed support on the website for some security features built in to specific browsers. If you are using Internet Explorer, could you please try using an alternative browser such as Google Chrome or Firefox.

Could I also check that when trying to log in to RuneScape that you are also logged in to Facebook. When logging in to RuneScape the browser will check that you are logged in to Facebook and if not may provide you with an error.

Finally could I also check if you are able to log in directly using the client. As this seems to be a browser specific issue, I would like to see if you can still access the game by direct means. Please let me know. :)

If all of the above check out, we may need to check if this is an overall connectivity issue. You will find some steps below that should help to correct some networking issues that could help to fix this issue.

First I would like you to do a full clear of your DNS, as this could resolve some minor hiccups your connection has when connecting to our servers. To do this follow the steps below.

1. Press the Windows key + R 2. In the run box type cmd 3. When the command prompt opens type the following. Press Enter after each new line:

ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew

4. Exit

If the issue still persists I would like to make sure all of your ports are open, so that your connection is not being blocked. This could possibly be due to an issue with your firewall - it could be blocking outbound traffic on the ports 443, 43594 and 43595. To sort this follow the below steps:

You will need to consult your user manual/ help topics for the specific settings needed by your security programs/firewall/router.

Please add exceptions for the following domains in your firewall:

  • .runescape.com, .Runescape.com

In particular, ensure that the following ports are unrestricted for both Inbound and Outbound TCP traffic:443, 43594, 43595

To make it easier to check if this affecting you, there's a program called 'ShieldsUP' that you could use that will tell you if those ports are open or not.

Finally, if you are still experiencing this problem at this stage I would like you to send us the results of a trace route. This will allow us to take a closer look at how your connection is holding up when connecting to our servers.

1. Go to the Start Menu.

2. Enter ‘cmd’ into the search bar that pops up, press enter.

3. Enter tracert world100.runescape.com then press enter. (Please replace world100 with the world you have been experiencing these issues on)

4. Take a screenshot of the information displayed, then upload this to a image hosting website.

Please include this image in a reply to us.

As this is a new issue, it may take us a bit of investigating but we will do our best to get this sorted asap. Please get back in touch and let me know how you get on, I look forward to your response.

If you have any other queries you can either send us another ticket or you may find the answers to your questions at our Support Centre here.

Kind regards, Mod Lex Dark Fury 16-Sep-2015 20:47 Yo! Thanks for the speedy reply. First of all...I am not using Facebook to log into the RuneScape site right now-I had to type in my username and password. Secondly, I am logging in using Microsoft Edge-It comes with Windows 10, the version of Windows I am currently using. Third, I am not currently logged into Facebook when accessing the RuneScape site on Microsoft Edge. Fourth, e very browser lets me log into the website now EXCEPT for Firefox, which continues to give me the same error described previously. Fifth, I have no trouble at all when logging into the client with my username and password and I can play RuneScape as long as I don't attempt to log in using Facebook or Google Plus. Trying to do so opens a tab in Firefox, which prevents me from logging in this way. Sixth, as you suggested, I did a full clear of my DNS, but still can't log into the site using Firefox. And finally, seventh, here is the trace image I came up with: http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv267/StormStryke4/Error%20Messages/RuneScape%20Trace_zpsgx7km8a0.jpg After going to all this trouble, I really do hope to gain a Christmas Cracker in return. ;-) Let me know if you have any more questions/comments... Mod Lex 17-Sep-2015 09:12 Hey Dark Fury,

Thanks for getting back in touch, Mod Lex again!

I really appreciate you providing us with this information. As this is not an issue we are currently aware of we will pass this information on to the relevant department, who will be able to investigate this issue further.

I am glad to hear that you are still able to log in to game via the client. Unfortunately I won't be able to provide with any steps on how to get this fixed until this issue has been investigated thoroughly. Don't worry though, we will keep you in the loop and let you know when we get a solution.

Once again I really appreciate you bringing to our attention, as it means we can give it a thorough looking over and hopefully get this fixed for everyone asap. :)

I hope I have been able to provide you with some useful information. If you need any more help, feel free to get back in touch - we are always here to help.

I wish you all the best on your RuneScape adventures.

If you have any other queries you can either send us another ticket or you may find the answers to your questions at our Support Centre here.

Kind regards, Mod Lex Dark Fury 17-Sep-2015 20:58 Yo Mod Lex! Dark Fury here. Since I am unable to reply to the tech message you sent me after this one, I am replying to this earlier message instead. I tried your suggestions in the newer message and found out...1: My Firefox is already up to date at version 40. 2: I am still getting the error message on Firefox when trying to access my account on the RuneScape website as follows: Secure Connection Failed

An error occurred during a connection to www.runescape.com. Peer's certificate has an invalid signature. (Error code: sec_error_bad_signature)

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.

3: After taking your suggestion and having dome the DPS dump thing, the RuneScape login page now appears as in the following screenshot: http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv267/StormStryke4/Error%20Messages/RuneScape%20odd%20login%20page_zpswecnsp7u.jpg and finally 3: I tried logging out and back into Facebook then tried clicking on the Facebook button on the odd RuneScape login page, but nothing happens when I do this. What should I do next, if anything...? Mod Lex 18-Sep-2015 13:45 Hey Dark Fury,

Thanks for getting back in touch, Mod Lex again!

I really appreciate you providing all of this information, it really helps our investigation on this issue.

As this seems to be a Firefox specific issue, it seems like there could be an issue with your current installation of Firefox.

Could I get you to do a complete uninstall of Firefox from your system, then download and install a new copy. This way we can narrow down what the root of the problem might be.

I understand that you really want to get this resolved, and so do we. As this is an unfamiliar issue we need to do some investigation to find the cause. Once again I really appreciate your help and cooperation whilst we look into this.

Please could you give this a go and let me know how you get on, I look forward to your response.

If you have any other queries you can either send us another ticket or you may find the answers to your questions at our Support Centre here.

Not a problem at all, Mon. I wanted to let you know I did what you requested and uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox. And quite surprisingly, I was finally able to log into the RuneScape website using Firefox! Whoa, man! This is really awesome!

Hi, jscher2000! Yeah, my problem is now solved. But it would be nice if we could somehow make this topic a sticky so if anyone else has any problems with RuneScape or any other game, Java-based or not, he or she can refer to this thread for a possible solution to their problem. Thanks!
