in Thunderbird 38.2.0 on win 7 the Tools->options->advanced screen does not offer a reading&display tab

I cannot find a way to control my reading and display options in Thunderbird. Until recently, when I clicked a new message the bold "unread" indication switched to not bold. I want to get that behavior back.
