I find mouseover pop-ups distracting and they sometimes they obscure what I'm looking at, or for. How can that feature be disabled?

If you only want Firefox to hide all mouseover tooltips, you could change the browser.chrome.toolbar_tips preference to false in about:config (see this mozillaZine article.)

  1. Enter about:config in your URL bar and press Enter
  2. Start typing "browser.chrome.toolbar_tips", without the quotes
  3. Double-click the preference to change its value to false.
