A plugin is from a program on your system. You can disable it, or remove its program.

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open the Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac:<Command>) <Shift> A)

On the left side of the page, select Plugins.

What is the plugin you are having problems with?

In other words Plugins are not actually installed in Firefox like Extensions and complete Themes are. The activate/deactivate options tells Firefox to make use of that Plugin installed on system.
