When I misspell a word FF underlines it but on right click it won't show suggestions for words like it used to.

I don't exactly remember when it started but it's been a few months and everything I tried didn't work.

I tried downloading a dictionary like some suggested but it didn't help (before the problem I didn't have to download anything and it still worked) I tried a few other things too but nothing works.

Chosen solution

If the ui.SpellCheckerUnderlineStyle pref is missing then that is OK and no need to worry.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Do you have a dictionary installed and selected?

You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu. At least one dictionary should be installed and have a check mark to indicate that it is selected.

  • Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
  • Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.

You can enable or disable spell checking globally:

  • Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"

You can look here for dictionaries:

Check on the about:config page that layout.spellcheckDefault is set to 1 (multi-line) or 2 (single-line, multi-line).

Check on the about:config page that ui.SpellCheckerUnderlineStyle is not set to "0".

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

I have a dictionary installed. Everything seems to be checked, but I don't seem to see the ui.SpellCheckerUnderlineStyle line at all when I search for it in the search line in about:config.
