How do I make autocomplete in the location bar load the entire URL?

As an example, when I type "b" into the location bar, it autocompletes to "bbc.co.uk", and not "bbc.co.uk/iplayer", which is what I want it to do. It has the full version in my history because it's the first entry in the dropdown box, so why can't it load it into the location bar? Happens regardless of hardware & OS as far as I can tell. I know it's not a major problem (I can just press down then enter) but it has been causing me much irritation, please help.

Hi mesa12358, Here is how to remove an entry from the awesome bar: Remove websites from the address bar suggestions

Sorry, I can't have been clear: in the example listed above, I have never typed "bbc.co.uk" into the location bar, only "bbc.co.uk/iplayer", so removing an item won't have any effect.

Do you have "bbc.co.uk" saved a a bookmark? If the blue star appears with an autocomplete "suggestion" - it's a bookmark you are seeing.

Nope, it's not saved as a bookmark. This is a more general thing that happens: whenever you want the location bar to autocomplete a url, it doesn't load anything after a / regardless of what website it is. It happens with all websites, not just the example listed above.

There been mention that a number of different extensions can cause that to happen.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Interesting thought, but didn't help :(
