Cannot attach files to new messages

Overnight, Thunderbird seems to have forgotten how to attach files to new messages. Browsing to the file doesn't work, nor does dragging and dropping it into the attachment pane. The files just don't attach - there's no error message and no crash. Please help, as I freelance for a living and sending files to clients is a huge part of my job!

I should add, it was working fine yesterday and nothing has changed that should have caused a problem - no new software installed or anything like that.
