Chosen solution

That should not happen.

Just to clarify, which bar do you mean?

  • The bar in the middle of the built-in Firefox home page
  • The bar with the site address (address bar or location bar)
  • The search bar on the right end of the toolbar (has a magnifying glass at the left end which shows various icons when clicked)
  • The search bar on a search engine website

Also, can you confirm that Firefox is set to use your preferred search engine? You can check that in the Search panel of the Options page:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Search

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

Is it working in normal mode again, or only in Safe Mode? If it only works in Safe Mode, please scrutinize your extensions for potential causes of interference.

You can review, disable, and often remove extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then case a critical eye over the list on the right and if it isn't something you remember installing and actively use, I suggest disabling it.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
