Can't open thunderbird after Avast antivirus updated programs
Thunderbird was working fine until Avast antivirus updated itself, Thunderbird and flash player. Well, it gave options to update those, but I don't actually know what was updated. But Thunderbird will not even open now. After a pc restart, Avast said it had successfully updated itself. Thunderbird is still unresponsive. Avast Tech support said they could remove all the malware they see on my computer if I pay them $150 for unlimited support for a year. I asked them why Thunderbird won't respond after the Avast update and they said it is because the brain of the pc has been infected with malware, so nothing works properly. I am irked that their update is responsible for Thunderbird's not working for me. Since Thunderbird won't open, I see no way to try to update it myself to see if that will make it work again. If I need malware removed, I'll get my local pc tech to do that. Not going to pay Avast to solve the problem they created. Are their a work-around to update Thunderbird? Help me get Thunderbird back working again, please? I have Windows XP which no longer is supported but my local pc tech said he would tell me if it became unsafe to stick with Windows XP. I also use Firefox browser and it is still working fine.

That sounds like a good idea.
Thunderbird is still unresponsive.
Try to start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled.

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode.

Does the problem go away?
