I don't want the huge shortcut icons at the bottom of the home page. How to I get rid of them?

I think the home page has changed & the toolbar with extremely large & annoying icons at the bottom is interfering with my email log in. I now have to go through multiple screens to log in to my gmail & I think it's because there isn't enough room for the full log in box. I have to enter my password on a second page instead of one click as I did previously. I monitor multiple email accounts all day long & this is driving me crazy. I don't want that toolbar or whatever it is. I looked through all of the settings and FAQ's. Nothing addresses this. Please tell me I can get rid of them & go back to how it was. Thanks for the help.

I think Firefox's built-in home page has had that design for a couple of years now.

Perhaps you had applied a custom style rule to change the page and it got lost? One way that might happen is if you used the Refresh feature. Firefox sometimes displays a message that it is performing poorly and you can speed it up by restoring some default settings. Any add-ons to modify the home page or rules in a userContent.css or userChrome.css files would have been removed in that process. (They might still be recovered from an Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop.)

Please provide a screenshot of what you are talking about.

See this support article. How do I create a screenshot of my problem? It is best to use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed a maximum file size of 1 MB.

Then use the Browse .... button below the Post a Reply text box to upload the screenshot.

See attached. The row of icons at the bottom of the screen when on the homepage. They are huge & I don't use them.

Hi, thanks for the screenshot. That is the default Firefox Start Page, so to change it to for example your Gmail page, please see How to set the home page.

Hope that resolves your problem.

Thanks. I know how to change it to a different home page, but I have been using FF for months & this wasn't an issue until this week. I wanted to change it back if possible, but I'll settle for choosing a new home screen if I have to. thanks very much for your help

Thanks. That helps. I just remembered that someone else used my computer last week while I was out & now it makes sense how this could have happened if she messed with something. I'm still annoyed - I don't handle change well. :) But I feel better about what's probably happened. Thanks again!

You would only see those buttons if you are on the about:home page. As soon as you open another internet page like a page where you log in to inspect your email then you shouldn't see this page with the launch bar anymore.

Did you previously see this page or did you had another page or a blank page set as the home page?

Note that Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.

I found it! It wasn't Firefox - it was Google. I think the person that used my computer last week changed the route they used to log in & it messed up my usual default. Sorry I took you on a wild goose chase, but thanks so much for the help! I did learn some things on what to check for in the future, & also stumbled into some customization options on Mozilla that I didn't know were available. Have a good one.
