In box and deleted box emptied but sent box ok. Can I get the messages back

Not even sure I was working in Mozilla but sometime later on doing so found contents of in box and deleted box had disappeared. Sent messages were still there. Have since received new messages which seem ok but noted that the sliding side bar on right side of in box is not there. Not particularly IT skilled so any help to restore contents appreciated - but keep it simple please.

look in your anti virus logs and quarantine for any references to inbox or deleted as files having been found to contain a virus.

Most people that loose mail like you describe have had the folder deleted by their anti virus.
