Firefox has been my browser of choice for about 6 years. On 3/16 /15 it stopped working. I tried all of the suggestions. I then completely uninstalled Firefox and Mozilla Maintenance. I restarted and checked my disks and memory. All other browsers: IE, Safari, Chrome & Opera work fine. I installed from Firefox Setup 36.0.3.exe this morning. Same problem. Works for about 5 minutes and then hangs.

Correction ! !

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

Cannot start in safe mode without restarting the computer because I get FF already running and then profile not found. If I restart the computer, I can start in safe mode. After about 5 minutes, FF hangs and the computer has to be restarted again. No real work can ever get accomplished because as soon as I try to load a page other than the home page, it hangs, and I'm back to using Chrome.

I restarted the computer and am able to go into Safe Mode. There are no crash reports in safe mode -- so no record of what is happening. I copied the raw data from the troubleshooting report and here it is:

Hope this helps some. Since Firefox has been crashing continually since March 11 and I had to completely remove and re-install, I think this will not have the answer. If you can think of anything else to try, that would be great. Thanks.

Now tried to go from restoring Firefox to my online bank. Firefox hanging, not doing anything. I got the Firefox Not Responding. When I closed that after waiting about 3 minutes, I got the Firefox already running. Clicking on that, then trying to start Firefox cannot start in either regular or safe mode. Have to turn the computer off and restart the computer. Because when I go to a website to do work, Firefox invariably hangs, this is not a solution.

If firefox works in Windows Safe mode then probably you have problem with other software, like security software or maybe a system driver, that is running on your computer.

Try to remove all rules for Firefox and plugin-container from the permissions list in the your firewall and let your firewall ask again for permissions to get full access to Firefox installation and at the plugin-container process and also for updater process.

thanks again

Lets try to re-install Firefox.

I uninstalled Firefox. The instructions said: To remove other files and folders that may not be removed by the uninstall, you must manually delete the Firefox installation folder. I got this message when I tried to delete the program folder manually: "The files are in use by another program."

This has happened before and I had to delete the Mozilla Maintenance program and then delete the files. So I did that. I still get the message, "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program." I skipped the offending folder and deleted the rest. There is now a folder named "tobedeleted" with 22 files of moz****.tmp and nsx****.tmp files which cannot be deleted. BTW, the version of FF I deleted was the same as the one in the latest download.

Restart the computer and try again. If you still have trouble,

Start your Computer in safe mode. Then remove the folder.

I think the automatic download was bad and the replacement (from the first re-install (36.0.3) was bad. Now working fine.

Thanks for your help.

Firefox worked for a total of about 25 minutes over 4 days. Then hung after 5 minutes with no crash report. Same message: Firefox not responding, wait or close. After 20 minutes I closed it. Then, Firefox running in another program. End Firefox. I click okay. Then, Firefox could not be started. Then to task manager, to end process. No response. Then to Details in Task Manager. End Firefox. Cannot end it. I am admin, and have admin -- could there be a setting wrong here? It is running on PID6800. I do not want to constantly have to restart my computer when Firefox runs 5 minutes and hangs without a crash. It's bad enough when it hangs and gives the "Oh, this is embarrassing" message, but when it doesn't even give that, it is unusable. Any other ideas on this? I cannot make Firefox my default browser as it was for 6 years because I would get no work done at all.

We won't know until the problem is settled.

I left a response for your post.

Answer to ofarukk: Yes, my problem is similar to yours.

I just tried starting in safe mode after restarting the computer. Firefox does not show in the task manager and yet the message says it is already running and cannot be restarted.

Let's try this;

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe web sites. Is the problem still there?

Open your file browser. Go to the computers Programs Folder. Rename any Firefox or Mozilla folders by adding .old to it.

While still in safe mode, run a registry repair / cleaner. After, reboot the computer. Then run the Firefox full installer. Download Firefox Full Installer For All languages And Systems {web link}

I went to the "start the computer in Safe Mode" link and I found this information:

    • In Windows 8, Microsoft eliminated pressing F8; however, it can be restored using a long, convoluted process and only if the user can run Windows 8. If a Windows 8 computer is unbootable before the F8-Safe Mode method was restored, it requires expert tech support at a repair shop.**

Since I've been running with Firefox flawlessly and I am running xampp, apache and mySQL. I moved this system from a windows XP to Vista and then to 8. I had to give up IE as a browser because of UAC. I know that I cannot run full UAC because of these programs. I'm going to assume that there is a conflict between one of those and Firefox. Xampp, apache, mySQL is indispensable to what I do. Full UAC is a sworn enemy of what I do -- I guess I should be on Linux and not Windows 8.

Going to a repair shop would only take away all the software and 300,000+ lines of code. Not a solution just to get Firefox to work. Sorry about that.

Maybe the Firefox people will figure out how to let the user run Firefox with UAC turned off. That seems to me to be the change that was implemented in early March, that Firefox balks when UAC is off. If UAC is off, Firebox will not play in the sandbox.

Thanks for trying. If you learn how to make Firefox compatible with UAC off, that might help me. If it is some other problem, I'd love to know.

System worked flawlessly from the day I bought it a couple of years ago with UAC off. Right now entire system working well without Firefox and I can test using Firefox on a windows 7 computer that doesn't have this development software. So I conclude there is nothing wrong with my registries that getting rid of my development software would not cure. But in that case, the cure would be worse than the disease.
