Odd Visual glitch on Taskbar when using Firefox

Hi

I am experiencing an odd visual glitch on the taskbar when using firefox.

Please take a look at this short video as it shows the problem, it's almost impossible to show it in pictures.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12595174/VIDEO0016.3gp

I am using firefox v36.0.1 on Windows 7 Pro 64bit. Videocard is an ASUS R9 280X using the latest drivers from AMD 14.12 Catalyst Omega Software.

Motherboard is an ASUS M5A88 with 16GB ram and an FX 6300 CPU.

It's a new build that I put together over the last 24hrs, and this behaviour wasn't present on the last system using the same version of windows, firefox and same graphics card and drivers. But on a different motherboard and CPU. Previous board was M4A79XTD EVO, with a Phenom II X4 955BE.

The glitching doesn't occur when at the desktop and firefox is closed. It doesn't happen when using IE-64 nor does it happen when I am using the steam software, or opening any explorer windows/folders.

All of the motherboard drivers are installed correctly, the onboard graphics is disabled in the BIOS. I have unchecked the firefox settings for hardware acceleration, smooth scrolling and text... to see if that was the issue. It wasn't.

I'd really appreciate any help in fixing this... I really don't want to have to resort to using another browser but this is bad enough and distracting enough to really bug me, and I don't see any alternative.

Many thanks. H

Hi jscher2000

I was just about to post a reply as a friend suggested it may be a video card rendering issue rather than a firefox one... although it is strange how it only affected firefox. I didn't have a chance to test it on Chrome as it's a new build and I don't want to install software I don't use.

So I went into the catalyst manager and had a look around at the settings. I changed something, but no help... I then started making a single change and testing until I found that enabling "gpu up-scaling" in the digital flat panels properties resolved the issue.

I am now flicker free

Thank you for your swift response though.

That's strange. Firefox's influence really should end at the top of the Taskbar.

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run

After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).

Any difference?

Good work, I never would have guessed that.
