Why do I get a white box with a small x instead of a picture in an email opened in Firefox that work fine when opened using Internet Explorer?

I have a problem with some emails that contain photos when logged on to the internet using Firefox. I can logoff and log back on using IE and the pictures are all ok. It doesn't happen on all emails with photos, just some. I have worked with senders of some of these emails and they have traced to other recipients and found no complaints. However I am the only recipient using Firefox. I am using Windows 7 Home; 16 Gbs memory and 1 Tb hard drive. Thanks for any information on this subject.

The images might be embedded via src="cid:image" and Firefox doesn't support embedded images via Content-ID. You need an email program to see images that are embedded that way.

Maybe your reply is correct but I just don't understand why the same photos can be seen when logged on using Internet Explorer. I am using the same email program, gmail, with each browser.
