Message "unable to process the backup file" when trying to restore bookmarks after a refresh

I hit refresh because I've had a few crashes lately, but now I am unable to restore the same set of bookmarks I had before. I've tried Import - Backup - Restore, but no matter which backup file I try, I get the message "unable to process the backup file." I tried installing an extension someone said had helped ("Places Maintenance"), but this didn't help either. I've tried restarting Firefox a couple of times, but still nothing. I do have bookmarks, but they are not the same set I had before. What's weird is that some of the pages I bookmarked within the past week are still there, but a number of folders and pages I've had bookmarked for years are gone. I am very frustrated about this, especially since I wasn't really having any major problem -- I just thought refreshing might help reduce the number of crashes. I would appreciate any suggestions. I'm not a techy -- please make any directions in clear steps. Thanks.
