How to prevent advert apges from loading alongside the page that I actually laoded?

How do i stop additional (or generally unwanted) pages from loading alongside the page that I actually requested.

These additional pages can be either advertisements or some selling a program that is claimed to improve the performance of my system.

I'm using Firefox 34.0.5 under Microsoft 8.1.

The problem never appeared when using XP that I converted from about a month ago!

Adblock Plus {web link} Blocks annoying video ads on YouTube, Facebook ads, banners and much more. Adblock Plus blocks all annoying ads, and supports websites by not blocking unobtrusive ads by default (configurable).
