Chosen solution

You Will have to hold down the Alt key and press Enter to make the link open in a new tab without using an extension. By default links always open in the same tab.

You can search the Add-ons website for an extension if you want to change this default behavior.

You can middle-click the combined Go/Reload/Stop button or use the Alt + Enter keyboard shortcut to open the link in a new tab.

I am trying to open a new tab when I input an address on the address line & press enter.
