Dec 2014 opening two tabs on startup

This just recently started happening. I do NOT have a pipe symbol under Tools|Options|General|Home Page. Per a different thread regarding this, I looked for a file "user.js," I did not find one on my computer.

At first it was giving me a blank tab in the first spot, and the mozilla startup page as the open tab second. I closed the first tab, went to Tools|Options|General|Home Page and reset my homepage. Now I get my homepage first with a blank tab as the open tab.

I have run the "Troubleshooter" add-on, and added it to this post.

BTW, I also uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox prior to asking my question. This also did not resolve the issue.

You can check for problems with preferences.

Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

You may also have to delete the compatibility.ini file.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

Per your instructions, I have tried all of the above: deleting user.js, deleting prefs.js, and deleting compatability.ini. Doing these did NOT solve the issue. Firefox is still opening two tabs on startup.

Your System Details list shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize prefs each time Firefox starts.

The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created this file and normally it wouldn't be there. You can check its content with a plain text editor (right-click: Open with) if you didn't create this file yourself.

The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

You are correct that the system details list shows that. However, as per your earlier reply, I deleted the user file as well as the prefs file prior to responding to your response. Your second response is just a restatement of portions of your first response and provided no additional useful information.

The problem still exists.
