Word and pdf show up in protective mode - how do I change the default to allow editing?

Word and pdf show up in protective mode - how do I change the default to allow editing?

Chosen solution

Just to clarify:

What Firefox does is mark downloads as having originated from the internet.

To control whether applications open downloads from the internet in protected mode, you can tweak their options. For example, in Word, see:

Hello,

In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:

  1. Go to Tools > Options (or Firefox > Options).
  2. In the Options window, select the Applications tab.
  3. In the Search field, type PDF. You should find Portable Document Format (PDF).
  4. On the right handside you should find an Action column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose Preview in Firefox.

Thank you.

Do you mean that you want to open a downloaded file in an editor and save the changes to disk?

It is usually better or required if the file is stored as read-only to use Save As and save the file under a different name. That will also prevent dataloss as it is not guaranteed that you keep files in the Windows temp folder.

When I download a word file I would like the default setting not to be protected mode, as I have to modify most documents I download and would like to save the step of clicking to get out of protected mode. Thanks.

This is related to Firefox's integration with Windows' download security API.

There used to be a setting to disable integration with your virus scanner which also disabled integration with Windows attachment/download security, but from what I can see, this preference no longer applies to Windows Vista or higher.

I'm not sure whether there is a way around it.

When I click to open a word attachment in an email it opens in protected mode (no editing) so I have to click to permit editing before I download. How do I get it to open in permit editing mode initially?
