If you use an IMAP e-mail account, mail is stored "remotely", i. e. on the server of your mail provider. The maximum mailbox size is given by your provider.

You can:

  1. Buy additional space from your provider (if possible).
  2. Delete messages that you no longer need.
  3. Move messages from your IMAP folder(s) to the Local Folder, see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Local_Folders .

Don't forget: Your IMAP Sent folder is part of your mailbox size as well.

Normally you consider point 2 or 3 from above.

You may create a (sub)folder on your Local Folder named something like "InboxBackup2014" or "SentBackup2014"). Be aware that those mails are stored "locally" (on your own computer). So you should make regular backups, see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup .
