Suddenly not receiving email

david replied

My emails suddenly stopped coming in. Everything was working fine until now! When I try to get emails in thunderbird, I get the message that cannot access the server, or that the system has timed out. I am using Thunderbird for my charter email accounts. I am using Windows 10 on my PC. I checked all email settings in Thunderbird and they are correct. I went to the online email with Spectrum/Charter website, and it is all there.

I need help understanding why this suddenly happened. I am using my Outlook email for this forum since I can't receive my charter emails. My outlook email on same PC is working correctly. Any help would be appreciated! Thank youm

If the OS was not changed, and if thunderbird was not changed, there is a possibility that the error message is correct. That is, that the server is down. That is separate from web access. Or, it might be some network problems causing the timeout. Thunderbird is only an agent, sitting on the edge of the network connection.

thank you for your response. I checked and the server is not down. Nothing has changed on my end. I even tried temporarily disabling my antivirus and firewall, and that did nothing to correct the problem. I tried repairing the inbox, and the emails that were already there now disappeared. I am in trouble with this mess. thank you

I regret the problem you have. My point is to never react quickly when suddenly everything stops. Shortly after you posted, another Spectrum user posted, although I don't know if the issue is similar. Your emails should still be on the web server. If there is a timeout issue, you might try this:

  1. click to settings>general
  2. scroll to the bottom and, on the right, is 'config editor'. click that
  3. enter this: mailnews.tcptimeout
  4. I think you will see the default setting is 100. Change to 250 save and exit
  5. restart thunderbird and let me know. Also, recheck config editor to be sure your change took.

David, I did check with Spectrum, and they ran a script and confirmed my email is working on the online portal, and there is no server issue with the network. I did what you suggested and changed the 100 to 250, however there is no "save" option anywhere on that pane. So I closed the app out and went back in, and ofcourse its back to 100. I can't see anywhere there where you can "save".  ???

Also, Thunderbird is acting weird, on my 2nd charter.net email account. Previously the body of the emails would show in the reading pane to the right of the screen. Now, when I click on the email in the list, I can't see the email at all. Even if I double click to open the email.......I get a blank page. OMG. I have not touched or changed anything in this email account. Something is really wrong.

After making the change, click on the setting and then close and reopen the config editor to confirm that the change took. Spectrum will always confirm that they components are working. As a volunteer, I have yet to see them work with a user on their email settings. As a volunteer, not affiliated with Mozilla or others, I suggest you consider switching to gmail or outlook or gmx, all free, all better supported. I know that doesn't solve your problem today, but do keep it in mind. :)

Okay David, thank you for trying to help me. Do you have any tricks for importing existing inbox from spectrum online portal to gmail? I don't know what else I can do since I can't get thunderbird to work with the charter.net emails. So strange! It was working fine for months. This was just a sudden issue out of nowhere.

Anyhow thank you.

I know of no way to download from web, other than with proprietary software. but, once you get this resolved, I encourage considering switching. It seems every day, spectrum users are having problems that are being ignored, according to their posts, by Spectrum.

Thank you, I am unable to resolve the problem, and you are right, I am currently migrating my emails over to outlook. I'm going to completely remove from spectrum/charter.net email, as I've had other issues with it in the past. . Appreciate your responses.

I am glad to assist. A tip: consider keeping the old email account active for a few months or more. I am in a transition myself from an unreliable email provider and had forgotten in how many places that email accounts are stored. Good luck. :)
