While best practice is not to accumulate messages in Inbox, but keep it as tidy as possible, it's not necessarily too many messages in Inbox for Thunderbird too handle. However, it's quite possible that anti-virus software is messing things up. Therefore, try to start Windows 10 in safe mode with networking enabled. Does the problem go away?

Windows safe mode disables anti-virus software. This is a troubleshooting step, not a solution.

I agree with christ1 ... unless it is a pop account. If it is pop, then 46.000 is far too much.

Does your problem go away using those instructions?
