how can i find my password?

Thunderbird has a password saving feature, which you must allow the program to use, either when you first set up your email account, or the first time you log in. If you have enabled it, it can be found at menu item:
Tools | Settings | Privacy & Security | Passwords | Saved Passwords
The "Show Passwords" area can itself be protected by a password. If you've enabled that feature and lost the password, I don't know of any way to see them. But otherwise, click the button and there they are.
Passwords can only be created or modified via the respective webmail account accessed via a browser. If you do not know password then there should be 'Forgotten password' link on that login page. Use it and follow instructions to regain access to your webmail account where you can reset your password.
- Please confirm you have access to webmail account.
Some servers allow a normal password to access the webmail account, but require you to create a 'Secure Mail Key' or 'app generated password' to use in third party apps like Thunderbird.
Other servers use Authentication Method OAuth2 which requires a few additional set ups but nothing drastic. We would need to know what server you are trying to connect to in order to advise on what is required.
You can access stored passwords in Thunderbird and if you modify a password via webmail you can then edit/update the stored password in Thunderbird.
If you got an error message asking to input a password because access was denied then it does not necessarilly mean the stored password is wrong, but obviously something is amiss.
Please upload images showing:
- The error message asking for password
- your current 'Account Settings'> 'Server Settings'
- 'SMTP' outgoing server settings for the account.
When I click on 'show passwords' (in Settings) I'm then asked to confirm my identity by giving another password! It doesn't say what password is required here. It's not the log-in password for my email account at Sky (my email provider) or my Mozilla log-in password either, or my PC log-in password. What else is left? Without the account passwords how can I transfer my account to a new PC (and keep all my messages)? Any ideas welcome. Thanks. David Collins.
There are two passwords that can be asked for, depending on what options you have chosen.
- Your system logon password
- An arbitrary "Primary" password you have chosen to protect the passwords. This is not related to any other password.
You would have had to set those options, either intentionally or unintentionally. If you have forgotten your Primary password, you can reset it, but you will lose all your passwords:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-your-primary-password-if-youve-forgotten-it
If you have no other record of your passwords, I guess you will have to re-set them at your email provider's web site.
By the way, it's best practice to start a fresh thread for your own questions, otherwise all previous participants to the thread may be notified about an issue they may have resolved long ago.
System logon pasword
When you start computer you logon to your computer user account to see desktop - it wants that password.
Typically if using Windows - it will say at the top of pop up window 'Windows Security'
