My desktop icon disappeared and so did my ability to acquire my e-mails. Tried re-installation but this failed with message, "Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password.

Please clarify the problem. I infer that you were successful in reinstalling thunderbird. if the problem is that you cannot receive messages, it may help to post screenshot of incoming server settings pane. Thank you.
