Information needed about missing "Reset Firefox" option on the Troubleshooting Information page... and also for Safe Mode in Firefox 15

  1. more options

    I think there is some information which needs to be added to this KB article.
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems

    What about when the Reset dialog box doesn't appear in Troubleshooting Information?

    When a non-default Profile or non-default location for the Profile is being used when viewing Troubleshooting Information, the Reset dialog doesn't appear. IIRC from reading one of the Bug reports, this feature is only for the Default Profile.

    I suspect that this is the problem this user is having with not being able to see the Reset dialog.

  2. The "default" profile is the last profile selected in the Profile manager and contains the line "Default=1" in the profiles.ini file. For example, my "test" profile was the last profile I selected in the Profile Manager and it's listed as follows in profiles.ini:

    [Profile5]
    Name=test
    IsRelative=1
    Path=Profiles/clnymrgm.test
    Default=1

    I have multiple profiles that I start with a shortcut so it's often the case that I'm not using my "default" profile and a "Reset Firefox" option does not appear in the about:support page. This came up in an earlier thread. See the discussion that starts here: https://support.mozilla.org/forums/knowledge-base-articles/708334#post-46497

    I was going to say that this discussion belongs in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article's own discussion forum, but maybe not, since the Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox article also needs to be changed for Firefox 15 (in my opinion). When multiple profiles exist, the Safe Mode option to reset Firefox will not appear unless you have restarted in Safe Mode using the "default" profile, meaning the last profile selected in the Profile Manager.

    Michael Verdi is the SUMO Content Manager so I'll let him decide if this is something that should be added to the KB.

  4. Michael Verdi posted a reply in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article discussion forum, here: https://support.mozilla.org/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems/discuss/2532 ....where he wrote, This is an edge case and I don't think we need this in the article as it will just add complexity for no real benefit. That's the only instance of the problem I can find on the forum. In that case the user is using an unsupported version of Firefox.

    For the benefit of those "edge" users with multiple profiles, I've updated the following MozillaZine articles to add that,
    The "Reset Firefox" feature is only available in the "default" profile (e.g., the last profile started in the Profile Manager, which would be the profile that includes the line "Default=1" in the profiles.ini file). The Reset Firefox option does not appear if you bypass the Profile Manager to start a non-default profile.

    Ed, I was wondering about the non-default location so I created a new Firefox profile in "C:\Alice-Shel\NewFxProfile" and tested it out. As long as the profile is the last selected ("default") profile, I see the "Reset Firefox" option in the about:support page. I also see the "Reset Firefox" button in the Firefox 15 Beta Safe Mode dialog, when I restart that profile in Firefox Safe Mode. Here's what my "default" profile in a non-default location looks like in the profiles.ini file:

    [Profile6]
    Name=NewFxProfile
    IsRelative=0
    Path=C:\Alice-Shel\NewFxProfile
    Default=1

  6. (For the record)

    Starting in Firefox 49, a "Refresh Firefox" button now appears for non-default profiles on the about:support page and in the Safe Mode window. Related bug: Bug 1265368 - Stop restricting Firefox refresh to the selected/default profile (status-firefox49: --- → fixed)

    Good idea since about:profiles is in Firefox now, giving "Profiles" more exposure to the user.
