Firefox 62 - Release Notes / Issues / Discussions - Post new Firefox 62 issues here

  1. Firefox 62 will be released on Sept 5th, a wednesday this time around. Windows XP/Vista are turning into unsupported platforms from this point onwards. The most recent but now unmaintained Firefox ESR version 52.9.0 may still be offered on the download page for those users though.

    2. Security Advisories: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/securit.../#firefox62
    3. Complete list of changes: https://mzl.la/2w7I79d

Some of the changes with the most user-facing impact:

    • Changes on the new tab page / default homepage: Search shortcuts for Google and/or amazon will be added into the Top Sites section for new and existing users. Those can be rearranged, unpinned and removed like any other site in this section as well: Bug 1480518
    • Once removed the most common search engines could be (re)added in the …-menu at the top right of the Top Sites section: Bug 1480507
    • In addition, users can now also set up to four rows of Top Sites and Highlights: Bug 1400536
    • Bookmark descriptions in the library got retired. Right now users can export a HTML-file of their existing bookmarks to back those up, in a later upcoming version those fields will be scrubbed from the places.sqlite database altogether: Bug 1463738
    • Users are now offered to clear local profile data after they disconnect from Firefox Sync - Bug 1409208; New KB article: https://support.mozilla.org/kb/remove-synced-device-firefox-accounts
    • Privacy: A Tracking protection toggle got added into the hamburger menu - Bug 1462468
    • Privacy: A “Clear cookies and site data” button got added into the site identity control center - Bug 1462469
    • Users with the containers feature enabled can now reopen an existing tab in another context - Bug 1376119
    • Autoconfig will be restrained to just setting/locking preferences in release builds and will no longer be able to run arbitrary code. At the moment this can still be controlled through the general.config.sandbox_enabled preference - Bug 1455601

Some articles to note changes on if not included above, and to further your reading ;): New

Later into this cycle the Firefox Monitor service will be switched on and get promoted, where users can check for known data breaches for sites where they have an account: https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2018/06/25/testing-firefox-monitor-a-new-security-tool/

As always, please feel free to add to this thread once you see more news or problems popping up with the new release :))

    Added later:

  5. I think it might be helpful to document options for users who have invested a lot of time in accumulating bookmark descriptions.

I've seen OneNote and Evernote suggested, but haven't looked into those myself.

One option would be to import bookmarks into the Zotero research tool, which is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux from https://www.zotero.org/

When you import a bookmarks.html file, it creates entries for each page but it flattens the folder structure, so it comes out like this:

    • bookmarks.html, with top-level Bookmarks Menu items
      • Bookmarks Toolbar folder
      • Folder1
      • Folder2
      • Other Bookmarks folder

When you click a bookmark, Zotero displays the Title, URL, and "Abstract" which contains the imported Description. (Screenshot #1) Double-clicking the items launches the page in the default browser.

Zotero also has an optional Firefox Connector webextension, which allow saving new pages to a Zotero collection (either under the bookmarks structure, or other folders the user created in Zotero). (Screenshot #2) Unfortunately, it is not a two-way street, users can't edit bookmarks in their Zotero collection from within Firefox.

    <center></center>

I didn't look at cloud sync.

Using a second program is less convenient than using Firefox features or fully self-contained Firefox extensions. However, it may suit some users whose annotation needs are heavy enough to justify using a purpose-built tool.
