After going through over the wiki page of SUMO buddies i think it needs upgradation. Most of the links are either not working or outdated. Please have a look over it.

    Hi Debapriya,

Thank you for exploring the depths of our wiki pages! :-)

We'll be retiring these pages soon, in favour of a much simpler and direct approach, which is detailed here.

    Keep rocking the helpful web!

  4. Another question: How come there is AFAIK nothing in any KB article about buddies ?

The phrase Too many Chiefs not enough Indians' springs to mind. Seems to be all generals but no foot soldiers.

Rather unusual a group with Nine members, and Nine group leaders, including three Admins. Its even got two Champions listed for its forum

    Hi Michał,

Could you expand on that ? Are we retiring all Wiki page ? Or are you just retiring the one about buddies ?

    Your post

    Covers very litle about Buddies.

Surely all Buddies documentation is not going to consist solely of a few Forum posts and nothing else is it. Hopefully you will also respond to my comments in the post above.

P.S. I see there is quite a lot on discourse*, but IMHO if we are going to use that we should link it from the Sumo site and include it in how to contribute Articles.

    * https://discourse.mozilla-community.org/c/sumo/buddies

It is also worth remembering discourse needs a login, and is probably totally inapropriate for new potential recruits looking for a buddy to need to use that.

Additionally surely it is not intended for Admin to get involved much in One to One Budying as mentors ( L10N may be an exception where an Admin: you! does need to be involved directly a mentor in some instances ) .

Another question: How come there is AFAIK nothing in any KB article about buddies ? <snip>

In case it helps: If you click the "Include obsolete articles?" checkbox in Advanced Search for "Buddy" and include all categories, you get these archived articles:

    Buddy program - Localization

Buddy Program - Army of Awesome (AOA) Overview

    Buddy Program-Support Forum Overview

Help new contributors - SUMO Buddy Program

Buddy Program - Knowledge base overview

The article discussion threads include "Archiving" posts that link to the wiki page that replaced the SuMo article.

  7. Thanks Alice, that at least explains some of the background.

I am assuming this is active again.

I can understand that whilst developing a project, detailed day to day matters, & organisation needs discussing, including allocating mentor buddy pairs; that discourse is ideal. Quite possibly it may not even need its own separate KB article, but surely it should at least be crosslinked and mentioned in KB how to contribute articles if the project is active either for offering mentoring, or recruiting contributors as mentors.

We do after all have an active forum /forums/buddies New Contributors This is a forum for new contributors to find a friendly buddy to guide them at SUMO

  8. Thank you John and Alice,

To answer your questions and comments:

    • How come there is AFAIK nothing in any KB article about buddies ?

As Alice mentioned, we (= the people in the group you mentioned) moved to the MozWiki at one point and archived the KB entries. That move came as part of the discussions we had with everyone on board back then. Since that move, we met quite a few times, and after a few other discussions decided to simplify the whole idea that was becoming too complex and burdensome for everyone involved. The wiki pages still exist simply because the old idea was never truly fully retired.

    • Are we retiring all Wiki page ? Or are you just retiring the one about buddies ?

The latter - just the ones about the Buddies in their current format, to avoid confusion. The rest of the wiki is hopefully up to date enough - if you see any pages that are not, do let us know via the forums and we'll work on that.

    • Your post "Nominate a Buddy of the Month!" /forums/buddies/711364 covers very litle about Buddies.

I hope it covers exactly as much as is needed by those who need to nominate a SUMO Community member to be a Buddy. If it doesn't, tell me what else do you need to know, and let's figure out where to put it. ( btw, I also published a note on the blog about it: https://blog.mozilla.org/sumo/ )

    • Surely all Buddies documentation is not going to consist solely of a few Forum posts and nothing else is it.

I may be wrong, but I believe that the devil is in the balance. Too much talk/e-paperwork drags people down and slows the good and natural interactions within a community. We tried that before and noticed it was not going to work.

I think a good sticky post beats a KB article in terms of contextual findability - when we have people coming to the forums, posts (and stickies) are what they see and interact with, first.

Let's give it a shot and see if it works?

  9. Thanks for the reply. I think I follow your reasoning, but so far then there is only a single entry point: for those needing Buddies .

Your sticky covers only nominating mentors for praise, not recruiting them, or explaining the Buddies system.

Or am I misunderstanding the purpose of your sticky as you say

nominate a community member to be a buddy

Maybe its aimed at listing people to be press ganged into being Buddies or Mentors ?

There is no entry point for Contributors wanting to be or know more about Buddies.

There is no mention whatsoever of Buddies in any KB article and that seems wrong to me. There is no path or information links from Sumo's /get-involved

I also note the notorious AoA recruitment path is still throwing recruits in at the deep-end /get-involved -> /get-involved/army-of-awesome -> (/users/authcontributor) -> /army-of-awesome All they get is

Have a question about Army of Awesome?
    Ask other contributors /forums/social-media

Terminology Mentors & Buddies Incidentally wouldn't a lot of this be clearer if the experienced Contributors and Admins were termed mentors not buddies. (Or if we like the friendly word buddy then buddy-mentors or buddy-guides ) If we don't want to call the novices: trainees or apprentices; then sure stick with Buddy, but please don't use the simple, single term Buddy, to refer to both parties. It is confusing.

  10. This blog post probably clarifies some of the questions: https://blog.mozilla.org/sumo/2015/01/18/whats-up-with-sumo-buddies/

  11. Having read the blog summing it up:

    1. Buddies are the mentors or just existing Contributors.
    2. We should all aim to help new contributors.
( We've all had to start as New contributors and so I am sure we already do try to help New people.)
    3. Michał & Madalina will always try to be available to help New Contributors, often by suggesting who else would be able to help them.
    4. Helpful contributors may earn a Buddies badge.
    5. Training schemes and formal pairing from a list of mentoring buddies is dead.

The buddy group would seem to be obsolete now ?

Is that being removed ? If not what is its function now ? How does it fit in with the latest blog.

Buddies are existing Contributors who are helpful to other (new) Contributors.

    Absolutely yes.

    Yes.

We have users there who have been Buddies in the past, and we will be adding people nominated as Buddies to that group. The function is mostly decorative - if we roll out nice badges for Buddies, we may be scrapping that group.
