The title for this KB article is misleading, as it just hides the toolbar icon. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/disable-pocket-firefox

Considering that Pocket is a 3rd party service, Mozilla is "pushing the truth" with that article, IMO. I may not have a problem with that wording if Mozilla "fully-owned" this new feature and had full control over it, but my feeling is that Mozilla is risking its' integrity with statements such as that.

IMO, "hidden" or out of sight isn't the same as disabled. Yes, "we" don't want users fiddling around in about:config to disable features, but lying about how to really disable this feature is wrong or misleading the user.

User since Phoenix 0.3 in Sept 2002 and a Firefox support contributor since 2003, long before Mozilla provided support for Firefox ... color me thoroughly disgusted with the direction Mozilla is headed ....

  6. sorry, i'm having to take back my prior remark/observation that removing the pocket icon from the toolbar wouldn't take it out of the bookmarks list as well. (maybe i did put it into the menu the first time and not in the area of unused buttons)

Hi Rasmus, as far as I know, Firefox wouldn't send data to or make requests from Pocket unless you sign into a Pocket account. If I'm wrong, I'm sure there will be plenty of screaming from people who keep an eye out for such things. Installing Firefox 38.0.5 doesn't sign you up for Pocket or bind you to any Pocket terms. This is not so different than the Firefox connectors for numerous other third party services (https://activations.cdn.mozilla.net/), except that the Pocket connector is bundled into Firefox itself rather than having to be added on. If you or anyone else wants to read the code related to Pocket that is included in Firefox, you can find the core files here: http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-release/source/browser/components/pocket/ (the preferences you find in about:config are in other files)

  8. Thank you everyone for expressing your concerns about the Pocket integration. I am right now typing up a reply to the thread Madalina has opened for this specific issue: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/forums/contributors/711327

  9. Looks like Pocket is available only in some Firefox builds. Thats a rather important fact we seem to have failed to document on our KB ( ?? or advertise in the Release notes ) etc.

Clearly all highly controversial. Quite a few suggestions on the intrnet that the T&C may be illegal in some jusirisdictions, and that Pockets own T&C may restrict where it may be used.

I wonder why it was included in Firefox Release in the first place. Guess I could understand Pocket being held down to Nightly or even Beta but all the way to Release without anything for other locales seems odd, and it jumps in at a point release.

Further Alice pointed out a bug in the disabling of pocket.

Seems like Mark is sorting out this minefield in Madalina's thread

  10. Hi John99,

We've listed the locales in the Where is the "Pocket for Firefox" button? and the main Pocket article (Save web pages for later with Pocket for Firefox).

If you're still seeing a lot of support forum questions, let us know and we can figure out how to make that information more visible (perhaps this warrants a separate article).

  11. Hi Joni, Thanks Just found that I was about to correct my last post. But I think I still have more questions. Not seeing many support questions at all, but there my be quite a bit of discussion elsewhere, time will tell is it a vocal minority or something gaining momentum

Update. Mainly a vocal minority at present, but the governance thread has high activity ~5k views, even though it is moderated, and we don't know what gets rejected there may be many failing to post. There is also quite a bit on input. The top pocket KB article has a respectable >40K views in7 days.

  14. i've seen a couple of reports recently, that the search panel under about:preferences isn't loading (& you also cannot add new search plugins through the search bar on sites that support this) - this seems to happen when all the default search providers get deleted from the firefox program folder\browser\searchplugins and no other custom engines are installed. a reinstall of firefox helps in this case, since it will put those search plugins back in place.

i suspect that it might be related to adware which wants to plant a search provider and removes all the competition this way. this is an issue that might be solved as by-product of https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1162569 that is landing in firefox 41 (or maybe uplifted to 40).
