Firefox 35 Release / Issues / Status

  1. more options

Happy new year everybody! I hope everyone's holiday time was as great as mine, cutting the cord and getting some time off away from the internet (with the exception of some xbox games ;)

Of course, all that time off can only mean one thing, it's back to work! And by work I mean another Firefox release.

First off, let me promise, no secret releases with this version ;) I know that 33.1 and 34.0.5 were both confusing for users and Mozillian's. We apologize for that, and while it was the best we could do under those circumstances, we've taken that feedback to the rest of the company and will work on a better solution if the need arises in the future.

Now, let's dig into 35, which should be a quiet release:

    Desktop

    • Firefox Hello redesign: As you know we released Firefox Hello as a sort of public beta in 34. We've not fully redesigned Hello, into a room based model with lots of improvements, and are ready for more users to start playing with it. Try it :) Instead of using skype, see if Hello meets your needs. If it doesn't, submit feedback!
    • New Search UI tweaks: We've made a few tweaks to the new search UI, and fixed a few bugs. This should help users still adjusting to the change.
    • about:support API: Users are now able to give us their about:support data without having to install the troubleshooting add-on and will allow us to collect this data on both SUMO and Input.
    • Misc performance and stability changes: Including some substantial updates to PDF.js, which should improve our PDF handling.

    Mobile

    • Help build Mozilla's Geolocation database!: Enable this feature by opening the Settings menu and in the "Mozilla" section check the contribution option under Data Choices. This will help us build a complete, open source and privacy respecting geolocation database to help break free of the proprietary ones on the market now.
    • Network error pages now include a search box!
    • Misc stability and performance improvements

Please let us know of any urgent or rising issues with these releases.

  2. Starting in Firefox 35 on Windows 7/Vista, you can disable Flash Protected Mode by setting the dom.ipc.plugins.flash.disable-protected-mode preference to true in about:config and restarting Firefox (bug 1108035); a ghacks article reported on this new feature last month.* It doesn't work yet on Windows 8 due to bug 1112709. Related discussion in the KB article forums here and here. [*] I tested this in Firefox 35 Beta on 64-bit Windows 7. Setting the preference to "true" does disable Flash protected mode (see https://etherpad.mozilla.org/FlashProtectedMode for testing details).

Hey all, just an FYI that there is a small bug in the installer for Firefox 35 on Windows XP, which causes it to crash towards the end of the install. It is caused by turning the Firewall service off, and then running the Firefox installer (not the built in updater). It's being tracked in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1120673 and already has a patch. If we do a Firefox 35.0.1 then we will probably include this patch.

Since the affected group is so small (Users doing a new install or pave over of Firefox 35 on Windows XP with disabled Firewall) this probably won't be very common on the forums, but the solution at least is easy.

fiddling with dom.indexedDB.enabled might break popular addons like adblock plus in firefox 35: http://www.ghacks.net/2015/01/16/fix-add-ons-not-working-in-firefox-35/

If I understand the article correctly the change may break Addblock plus, which is Firefox's most popular addon, and also Ghostery and sessionrestore are affected. However problems will only occur if the pref is toggled from the default.

Mozilla changed the behavior of the Firefox preference dom.indexedDB.enabled so that it applies to websites, add-ons and session data instead of just websites as before. The issue with this is that setting it to false, the default is true, causes the issues with add-ons and session restore in Firefox.

I suppose we will not see this much, unless some popular website is advising to toggle this pref. Or if perhaps some add-on toggles it.

    Update

It seems a lot of users are affected. The change is partially reversed in Fx36. It will allow addons and chrome to use the storage still see

    • Bug 1079355 - Make 'dom.indexeddb.enabled' pref only affect content #c20
.... all this does is ensure that add-ons/chrome can always use indexeddb, even if it's turned off for content. ....

Hey all, just an FYI that Firefox 35.0.1 was released today. Fortunately this isn't a chemspill, just a regular dot-release that fixes a bunch of minor issues. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/35.0.1/releasenotes/

All users should update ASAP, especially if they are experiencing one of the crashes listed above.
