    Starting in Firefox 35, you can disable Flash Protected Mode by setting the dom.ipc.plugins.flash.disable-protected-mode preference to true in about:config and restarting the browser (bug 1108035). To re-enable Flash Protected Mode, reset the preference back to the default "false" value. At time of writing, however, this option does not work on Windows 8. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1112709 http://www.ghacks.net/2014/12/21/how-to-disable-flash-player-protecte...

    I just added the above to MozillaZine's Flash article section on disabling Protected Mode in Flash and thought it should be added to this article.

    P.S. The Troubleshooting section, "Playing Flash videos makes Firefox hang" currently has the following:

    {for win7, win8}

    {/for}

    The above would need updating to add {for win7} steps to set the dom.ipc.plugins.flash.disable-protected-mode preference to true in about:config. Adobe's "Last Resort" method would be for win8 only. [*]

    [*]Note: The related Windows 8 bug (bug 1112709) is marked fixed in mozilla37 so a future update would be needed to add the about:config steps for win8.

    I've been meaning to get to this!

    Thanks for updating the article for fx35 with instructions for win7 to disable Flash protected mode with the new preference.

    I made some other edits to the article and marked it ready to localize and I set up a "Need changes" entry to review for win8.

    As a continuation of bug 1112709, this means the Flash protected-mode hook doesn't work yet on Windows 8.1.

    We have to keep an eye on this before showing the about:config steps for win8.

    Another bug to watch is this one:

    Bug 1119941 - Test: disable Flash protected mode

    Benjamin Smedberg [:bsmedberg] 2015-01-09 12:49:36 PST

    The results of bug 1111791 indicate that Flash protected mode doubles or more the rate of Flash crashes and hangs for Firefox users. In order to validate that experiment against a larger audience and also get better crash-stats, we intend to disable protected mode by default up to beta.

    Flash problems are one of the major reasons people are stopping using Firefox. This change is definitely trading off security for better functionality, which is a tough call, but it's something we're going to try on beta.

    No decision has been made yet about rolling this out to release users.

    It looks like there's a plan to turn off Flash Protected Mode in Firefox by default in future beta/aurora/nightly versions.
