Thunderbird 29.5 causes Windows 7 to request permission "to make changes to this computer".
This has only occurred since the upgrade to 29.5. No other version has caused this problem. Tbird 29.5 also loses its icon on every new boot up every morning, but not a a restart, requiring a manual purge of the the iconcache.db. Why is this happening in 29.5 and what is the work-around for these problems?

In addition to modifying the UAC - image of settings shown here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2046046/how-to-fix-your-pcs-worst-annoyances.html
Try this for specific programs:
- Go to the Compatibility tab of the shortcut properties
- Ensure "Run as Administratror" is NOT checked
- Ensure you DO check "Run in Compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows 7"

Probably the best "work around" is to not run beta releases. The last full release of Thunderbird is 24.5. Here is the beta site where you can report problems with beta versions.

Perhaps my error in version ID (29.5) confused the issue. I am not running the Beta, I am running 24.5, so the problem/question still stands. Probably best not to rely on robots to post answers, ya think?
The question you are referring to is displayed when an update is available to be installed. If it happens every time, it might be that an update is stuck. You could try to right click the Thunderbird icon and choose 'run as Administrator' yourself.

No robots here. Just responding to the info you provided. No matter how inaccurate it might be.
First off, let me apologize for my sarcasm, to you and everyone else who may attempt to help me. The email notification says that the email is sent by a robot and that is what I was referring to. It was a misdirected and inappropriate comment. As for the problems, both issues are still prevalent. Although I have had absolutely no problem with the newest install of Firefox, the T-bird upgrade has just not taken well. Even to far as to uninstall and reinstall the program...4 times now, with no improvement. I am a hardware guy with minor system tweaking skills, so any help sent my way really is appreciated, even more so if I can get this SOB to work properly. Thanks again.
re: "Windows 7 request permission "to make changes to this computer"'
The permissions pop up is not a Thunderbird error.permission etc message. It is an OS and UAC permissions issue, so that is to do with Windows 7. The default option of User Account Control is to notify you only when programs try to make changes to your computer or you install new programs.
re: ' loses its icon on every new boot up'
I presume you are referring to the 'desktop shortcut icon' or icon on taskbar or both. An envelope surrounded by a blue bird. Please confirm.
Did an icon remain but change to a Windows broken file icon? Please confirm.
If yes, then that is a Windows 7 ironCache.db issue.
it does not suggest deleting the file, but ending the task and restarting it.
Toad-Hall: Thanks for the response. I am aware that both of my issues are Micro$oft related but was hoping that another T-Bird user had experienced the same issues and had found an error.
The icon issue is not just the desktop but the Taskbar, Start Menu, even the T-Bird file folder - everything. Gandhi's fix works every time and that's the problem, every new boot requires me to repeat the fix - Windows 7 problem.
The ehow fix is just wrong, by choosing "Never" leaves your entire system open to viruses, Trojans and any other manner of evil.
I am sure that both issues are the same problem within Win 7, I just have no idea where to look to fix the problem.
Like I said earlier, Firefox gives me no problems, just T-Bird.
re: Thundrebird shortcut icons
Did an icon remain but change to a Windows broken file icon or is there no icon not even a broken file icon visible? Please confirm.
Can you check to see if there is more than one installation of Thunderbird?
If yes, then uninstall it via Control Panel > Programs and Features.
Did you have more than one installed - like an older version?
Modified
The icon becomes a generic file icon, not the traditional broken file icon (like when a picture doesn't load) and this happens on Desktop, Task Bar and in the T-Bird file folder.
There is only one version of T-bird, originally when T-Bird updated. I have since deleted it twice and reinstalled via new downloads, just to make sure that previous downloads were not corrupt.
The older version was 23.x as Airmail suggested, I avoid betas and waited until 24.5 was available.
The iconcache.db deletion seems to have worked today, finally but Windows still wants "permission to make changes..."
It has to be a bug in how Win7 sees this new update, which is why I'm hoping someone in the community is savvy in Windows. I can build a great box but I am at the mercy of you guys who understand coding.

"Run as Administratror" was checked (is that the default setting), it no longer is and T-Bird opened for the first time since upgrade without asking for permission. Problem solved, Thanks.
What is interesting is that under the "Run in Compatibility mode for: " option I do not show anything higher than Vista. I am running an early version of Win7, so that might have something to do with it, but it works and that's good
Thanks again and everyone who jumped in to help me.
