Could not read chrome manifest 'file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Mozilla%20Thunderbird/chrome.manifest'.

All of a sudden, I can not connect to the server "?" and I get a couple of error messages. The one above plus "The RETR command did not succeed" and "Sending of password did not succeed, #AUTH701 Service no available". I tried deleting my password from the memory and it asked me for it again but no joy. I have checked and my web-mail - Yahoo - works fine. TB just wont go get it. Can I get help from anyone please?

Chosen solution

The problem is that the ATT / Yahoo mail service is apparently run by kindergarten children and no att customer is getting what they pay for. They give thunderbird a list of messages it can retrieve, then says gotcha I can not retrieve them. ATT like it not working. You use their add mail in a browser. I talks about this here http://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com.au/2013/04/the-retr-command-did-not-succeed-thank.html

However if you dig into your Thunderbird profile, locate the popstate.dat file and delete it.

Help menu (alt+H) > troubleshooting information

Click the show folder button

Close Thunderbird

navigate to the mail folder in the explorer window that opened.

Now the att.yahoo or whatever server name they are using this week.

popstate.dat will be in that folder.

Deleting this file makes Thunderbird forget where it is up to in downloading mail from Yahoo, which apparently changes id numbers at random intervals or something. The result is everything you have left on the server will be downloaded again.

So you might want this add-on to clear up the mess. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/remove-duplicate-messages-alte/?src=search

I blame ATT / Yahoo as about 99% of people coming to these forums with this issue are ATT/Yahoo customers. But it might be the security suite they provide as well. McAfee has been causing issues with Thunderbird for more than a year and my best recommendation is don't let it anywhere near your mail. It is however something fairly unique to Att/ Yahoo that did not exist before they got involved with the yahoo service.

I believe you are seeing the error about chrome.manifest in the Error Console. In this case it can be ignored.

Could you please verify your Yahoo settings with the following reference?

I verified. I changed what I had (which had been working sense I started TB a couple months ago) to what it said in the help forum.

After restarting TB, I received the message below: The RETR command did not succeed. Error retrieving a message. Mail server inbound.att.net responded: problem retrieving message. I was getting this message before the change.

In addition, listed below are the 3 error messages I can retrieve:

1 Could not read chrome manifest 'file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Mozilla%20Thunderbird/chrome.manifest'.

2 Could not read chrome manifest 'file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Mozilla%20Thunderbird/extensions/%7B972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd%7D/chrome.manifest'.

3 While creating services from category 'profile-after-change', could not create service for entry 'Disk Space Watcher Service', contract ID '@mozilla.org/toolkit/disk-space-watcher;1'

The other message I have received but did not copy completely was something like this: inbound.att.net :Problem retrieving message Sending of password did not succeed. #AUTH701 Service not available.

A lot of these messages are benign, in fact the message you posted last contains a reference to what is going wrong.

In fact this is an issue specific to AT&T.

Please see this AT&T post which explains to solve the problem. Having said that, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know if this solved your problem.

I did as directed a couple of times hoping it would help. However, if the password were incorrect, then I would not be able to send mail where I am able to send it. So anyway, it just has me verify the settings (again) and change my password which I did to no joy. The only difference now is that I am asked for my password each time and then receive the same error message. Anymore ideas?

Matt, I really appreciate all your time and effort. I just wanted to post this so that others that may have the same problem can see what is up. I did everything you recommended and much more and nothing worked. I tried resetting the settings a least a half a dozen times and creating a new account 3 times with no joy. So, I haven't tried anything for 3 days and then when I open TB, it works. I will have to see if it is a fluke or long term. Att says there is nothing wrong on their end and no one else was reporting the problem I was having. Ghosts in the machine I guess. Anyway, thanks again for your timely effort and I have great appreciation for your attempt. I will post again if the problem returns anytime soon. Floyd. P.S. I will now mark this as closed.
