I press the 'get mail' button and the same message appears in the box at the bottom and nothing further happens. This problem started 2 days ago suddenly. i can still receive my email messages using BT Yahoo mail on this computer ,so the connection to my home hub modem is still active. I have downloaded the programme again from your site and this has not solved it.

BT are, I think, in the process of moving us from yahoo to an alternative provider. Have you missed any messages from them about this? I think they intend that we shouldn't notice, nor have to do anything, but anyone who, like me, has set it to use a named yahoo server rather than BT's alias may find it stops working when the switch-over happens.

I'd try adding a second instance of the account, and see what settings Thunderbird finds for you.
