I can close all these windows and continue to use either, but this occurs without warning for no particular reason I can discover. It just now happened as I was filling out this form. It seems to be related to mouse movements -- but I can't repeat it. It seems totally random.

Try to start Thunderbird in safe mode.

Does the problem still occur?

It may not be related to Thunderbird at all. As a matter of precaution, scan your machine for malware.
