How to install Firebug on Firefox 17.0.1

I have been going around in a circle trying to install the Firebug add-in. I download the "firebug-1.12.8-fx.xpi" file but it is not a recognized file type and I can't see how to install it.

All the related links I find just take me back to the download page again and again.

So I have the .xpi file and I have Firefox on Windows . . now what ?" I didn't know I was this stupid, I install and configure whole networks for banks from scratch.

Chosen solution

You can also do the two very old methods of Extension install off disk by File->Open file (Ctrl+O) and browse to extensionname.xpi and open to install or by draging the .xpi file on to a open Firefox window to get install propmpt.

To install an add-on simply click the green Add to Firefox button on the add-ons's page:

Firebug 1.12.8 requires Firefox 23 or later. Firefox 17.0.1 is a very old version that's full of security vulnerabilities.

As for installing an add-on from a local .XPI, for future reference, this is how it's done:

  1. Open the Add-ons Manager (Ctrl+Shift+A), then the Extensions category.
  2. Click the Gear Icon at the top and choose Install Add-on From File.
  3. Select the local .XPI file.
