Lock thunderbird to not delete old messages that I delete in my gmail account

I'm planning to use thunderbird as a backup for my old emails. I've downloaded everything at setup and I know want to 'lock it down'. So that it no longer syncs with my gmail account for new emails and does not delete anything on thunderbird if i delete my old emails in gmail going forward

Is this possible?

Thanks in advance Jon

Chosen solution

Right click the main folder where you want to create a new one under and select NEW FOLDER or NEW SUBFOLDER depending on where you are in the folder tree.

You set your account up as POP, Yes?

No - i think it is imap automatically - Do i need to change to PoP?

POP is a download of the inbox, IMAP is a synchronisation of the whole account.

You can move mail from the GMail folders to local folders and that breaks the IMAP synchronization, it also removes them from the mail server.

Ok great - sorry and how do I move them to local folders?

Thanks Jon

Select, then drag and drop, or right-click|Move to…

Right-click is safer.

Tip: move messages, not folders.

Sorry - last question - Can i replicate the folders in local? Understand that I need to move emails rather than folders but would be good to keep the same organisation

Also, if i remove the password from each account on the IMAP- will that stop it being able to sync and then leave the mail untouched as well?
