How can I set the delivery format as HTML rich text as a default?

Messages look great when I send them but when people reply I see my message was in dorky skinny letters which means that is what my recipient saw. I can fix this by checking "rich text" under "delivery format" but I have to do it each time I send an email. How do I set "rich text" as a default?

Thank you

Even with delivery format set, Thunderbird only sends and HTML part if "sufficient" formatting is present. An example for enforcing this is to add some colorized fonts to your signature which is sent out with each message:

  1. add something like this to your signature HTML file:
    • <font color="010101">&nbsp;</font>
  2. right-click on the main account entry in the folder list to the left and select "Properties" from the menu. Copy-paste that code into the "Signature text:" box and check "Use HTML"

Either of those will create a signature containing a blank text of almost black color, the latter triggering the HTML part of the auto-detect mechanism.
