I deleted firefox so that i could re-install it, yet i receive the message that there is another application open. how do i resolve this?
I am working on a MAC computer. I attempted to update to a later version of firefox (as prompted by the firefox sign in). since that time, i have not been able to sign on with firefox. I deleted firefox, but am unable to re-install as i receive the message that there is an application of firefox currently open. When my attempts to resolve were unsuccessful, i took my mac to the apple store, where they were also unable to find the firefox application allegedly open on my computer. Please advise me as to how I can correct this problem.
thank you.

If you have not yet done so, get the full Firefox installer from Mozilla.org or Firefox In Any Language. Then try rebooting the computer. After the computer is ready, run the installer.
If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox application and save the disk image file to the desktop
- Firefox 26.0: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
- Trash the current Firefox application (open the Applications folder in the Finder and drag the Firefox application to the Trash) to do a clean (re-)install
- Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your personal data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data when you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.
Try start your macin safe mode, then try intall the firefox:
