Hello there,

I recently bought a mobile touch device running full Windows 8 on it and installed FF on it as the default browser - just like I did with my PC. However I was disappointed to find out that the zooming on the desktop version doesnt seem to behave like it does on a mobile device - it just zooms in like it would on any other desktop in steps - which makes it difficult to fit a site's content to the screen. Is there any way to allow stepless zooming?

Many thanks!

That is likely possible in the Metro version of Firefox (in development).

Thanks for the reply. Since the metro version will be designed for RT devices as well I expect it to be not fully equal to the desktop version concerning plugin support and addons - I think this will be a big issue - it would make the idea of having a full Windows device more or less pointless. Are there any other alternatives to this problem?

I just tried the nightly out. Despite the fact that it is visible in the metro apps it still behaves like a normal desktop application - theres no automatic keyboard popup and the zoom does not seem to work as desired as well - sadly. I really thought there is a simple solution to this issue

Okay thats at least a solid statement. Is there any way I can suggest this feature to the developers for the future versions?

Hi, I'm one of the developers working on touch-screen support in Firefox. We do plan to add smooth pinch zooming in desktop Firefox, but we need to make some significant changes to our graphics code first, so it may take a while. When we're able to start work on pinch zooming for Windows desktop, we'll be tracking it here:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=789906

Pinch zooming does work in the experimental Windows 8 Touch ("Metro") mode in Nightly, but the instructions for switching to Metro mode are out of date. To switch to Metro mode, follow these steps:

  1. Open Nightly on the desktop
  2. Click on the "menu" button in the Nightly toolbar (icon with three horizontal lines)
  3. Press the "Windows 8 Touch" button in the menu. If you don't see the button, press "Customize" and then drag the "Windows 8 Touch" button to the menu or toolbar.

(I submitted an update for the official instructions, which I hope will be approved soon.)

Kudos to Matt Brubeck for taking the time to provide a bit of transparency and clarity on the issue. Like others, I have recently invested in a touchscreen device running Windows 8.1 and pinch-to-zoom is one of the many strongpoints of this interface.

For what it's worth, Google Chrome does not yet enable pinch-to-zoom as a default unless you choose to run Chrome-Canary (the unstable daily build). And, while it is possible to enable stepless pinch-to-zoom in Chrome, I have found that it sometimes causes the application to freeze for a bit.

I am very much looking forward to stepless pinch-to-zoom support in Firefox. Keep up the excellent (and open) work!
