I get requests to update Firefox but Norton says there's a problem

I thought Mozilla Firefox automatically updated itself when used. However, I constantly get a white block at the lower right of my screen telling me to click it to update to a new version of Firefox. When I tried this Norton claims that there is a danger in doing this, so I quit.

Chosen solution

You probably downloaded the stub installer that needs to download additional files from the Mozilla server and some security software identifies this version as a threat.

You can find the full version of the latest Firefox 24.0 release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:

Download and save the full Firefox installer to the desktop and start the installation with a double-click on the desktop icon.

hello, could you provide a screenshot of this error message from norton?

How do I create a screenshot of my problem?

I don't have and can't find Microsoft Paint

if you have windows 7, there should be an integrated screenshot-program named "snipping tool" - you can search for it in the start menu...

Let's forget about the screenshot, here are some of the messages:

A white box appears (often) on the lower right screen stating that Firefox 24.0.0.5001 is available for update. Clicking on the update button brings you to the Mozilla Firefox website where you can download Firefox Setup 11754776. When this is quickly downloaded then you can go into your downloaded documents and click on the setup. When this is done, a Norton Message appears that it is analysing the firefox setup 11754776. Then a Red Message appears that states that 11754776 is Not Safe and has been removed from your system......

I think that this is some kind of malware with a physhing intent or worse and should be reported to Mozilla. As I understand it Firefox provided updates automatically when you use their ISP.

Hello,

Please update to Firefox 24.0.Please follow the following steps below:

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Please report back to see if this helped you!

Thank you.

I think the safest and usually best integrated way to update most software is to use its "Check for Updates" feature. In Firefox, that can be found under

Help > About Firefox

In other programs (e.g., Adobe Reader), it may appear directly on the Help menu.
