Multiple identical tabs suddenly appear and require closing firefox to contine working.
When I choose certain email addresses or web sites my array of open tabs across the top of the page immediately fills with many, many identical tabs of the same name. I have to quit Firefox and restart to get back to work.

Hello,
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.
To Reset Firefox do the following:
- Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
- Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
- Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
- Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Thank you.
You get that problem if you select the Firefox program to handle a file when you get an "Open With" dialog.
Check the Mailto application in Firefox > Preferences > Applications
Make sure that it isn't set to the Firefox application because Firefox can't handle the mailto protocol internally and you will get tabs opening endlessly.
Try to delete the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.
