Firefox suddenly began opening every time I start my computer. The tab is always there and it never closes. I don't want it to. How can I change it back?
I tried unpinning it but it is still always open.

Could Firefox or a particular web page be part of your Windows start up sequence? The Autoruns utility is useful for reviewing and disabling start-up items:

The forum software detected your Firefox as version 18. Is that correct?
Version 18 is not secure; Mozilla discloses security flaws after each new release. Is something holding you back from upgrading to Firefox 21? Please let us know so we can suggest solutions or workarounds.
If Help > About Firefox shows Firefox 21.0, you may need to clear the preference that is misreporting your version number. See: How to reset the default user agent on Firefox.
Yes! I went to system config and unclicked some things that didn't need to start up every time I opened my computer. I didn't see Firefox there, but something I unclicked fixed the problem.
Thank you SO MUCH!
I forgot you also asked about upgrading Firefox. If this one isn't secure I guess I'll need to do that. I dread it though. Every upgrade (of any software) seems to bring new stuff I don't want.
Thank you for letting me know it isn't secure.
Hi 1865, several things changed between Firefox 18 and Firefox 21. Here are some related support articles for reference:
- Downloads: moved from the pop-up Download Manager window to a Download Panel that drops from the toolbar; download history remains in the Library dialog. Where to find and manage downloaded files in Firefox
- Built-in PDF viewer ("Preview in Firefox"): not as full featured as Adobe's viewer, so if you need that, see: View and edit PDF files using Firefox’s built-in viewer.
- Per-window private browsing mode: Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history. Note that this feature is now on the File menu instead of the Tools menu.
- "Clear Recent History" moved from Tools menu to History menu.
Two more came to mind:
- Native audio and video players auto-play MPEG media. Some user prefer the old behavior (e.g., to make it easier to download MP3s), as described in this thread: How to disable the built-in media player in FFv21?
- Changed location of "shared" plugin folder. After this, Firefox cannot find some previously installed plugins. Windows Media or other plugins stopped working after Firefox update

Hi 1865, if you no longer want email notifications from this thread, come back to your question and look for the QUESTION TOOLS section in the right column where you'll find STOP EMAIL UPDATES.
Hi xSum1x, I suggest using some of the scanning tools in this article as the first step in the clean-up: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware. After that, you can use Microsoft's Autoruns utility to see what is running at startup and turn it off (using this tool can be a little overwhelming, but if you focus on the startup tab, it isn't too bad): Autoruns for Windows. Does that clear it up?
Hi jscher2000, thank you very much for your reply. After using Autoruns few time and closely reading each file I finally find the treat and removed it.
Once I again thank you for your help.
