flash crashes

when i try to update flash or try to remove flash and install an earlier version, it tells me that it cant run the uninstall, nor the current flash because firefox is running. the problem is that firefox isnt running. actually, i closed all windows, showing only the desktop. a message pops up that says adobe will retry install/uninstall automatically once ive exited the conflicting application (firefox). i let that sit there and i went to lunch. when i came back, it still hadnt continued with the install and later, the uninstall, even though firefox wasnt running. im running v. 21with win 7

Did you try to reboot and immediately try to uninstall or reinstall Flash?

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
