How do I get a side bar to show when I open Firefox?

more options

I can open it by going to view and select sidebar

Chosen solution

If the sidebar (F10 > View > Sidebar) is open when you close Firefox then it should open automatically the next time you start Firefox.

If this isn't the case then you can check for problems caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file.
