In our newsroom environment, staff prefers to have MP3s from various download sources open directly in an outside program's window (in this case Goldwave is the preferred program). That being said, with the newest version (21) the behavior of the program has changed so that MP3s are opening in a separate browser window, regardless of the preferences in the "Applications" window of the Options as well as the program defaults within Windows.

hello tjh1211, yes firefox 21 now makes use of the codecs that are included in your OS that enable it to directly play mp3 files. in order to disable that, enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named media.windows-media-foundation.enabled. double-click it and change its value to false.
