I uninstalled firefox as the only way to get rid of a toolbar, then restored my system only to lose all bookmarks, what can I do?

Uh oh, when you uninstalled, did you choose to remove all your personal information? If so, do you have any backups of your system?

There is a chance that Windows saved a copy of your places.sqlite database, or the bookmarkbackups folder, at some point, as part of a restore point, e.g., when you did Windows updates. I'm not sure how to search that, however. I did find a tutorial for a third party tool: System Restore Points - Manually Extract Files and Folders - Windows 7 Help Forums. If you try it, you are looking for a folder similar to:

C:\Users\oldusername\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

Rescue everything you find there so we can try mining it for useful stuff.
